Purple Martins, members of the swallow family, have for many years engaged in a mutually beneficial relationship with humans. Martins are agile fliers, catching the bulk of their diet, small insects, while on the wing. Not only are their aerial talents a joy to observe, but their melodious chatter and song are a pleasure to the ear. Purple Martins are highly social and choose to nest in group dwellings. They prefer open areas (approximately 30-60 feet away from trees) and to be in close proximity (about 30-120 feet) to human habitation. A nearby open water source is also to their liking. According to the Purple Martin Conservation Association, Purple Martins are dependent upon human supplied nesting cavities for reproduction.
