Create an Ombre Effect with Flowers

Purple petunia flowers with an ombre effect

Ombre refers to a color gradient where a color moves from its lightest shade to its darkest, or vice versa. For your spring garden, think about your favorite colors and how you could create an ombre effect in your garden. Maybe you have border flowers that start as dark purple flowers and move to increasingly lighter purple and pink flowers.

For this garden inspiration idea, you will need flowers that come in a wide range of colors. Consider perennial flowers such as dianthus, tulips, and Lenten roses (which are not roses–they’re actually a type of buttercup flower).

You can also create this look with annual flowers. Some good options include dahlias, petunias, Gerber daisies, and lantanas. Butterflies love lantana flowers!

Plant Pollinator-Friendly Flowers

Pollinators are crucial to the ecosystem, and they help over 85% of the world’s flowering plants reproduce.  You can help the local pollinators by planting pollinator-friendly annuals and perennials to give pollinators food.

Geranium plant that has pink flowers

Consider the following pollinators and their favorite South Carolina native plants:

  • Monarch butterflies like milkweed, especially swamp milkweed.  We promise that the plant is prettier than the name sounds.

  • Bees go bonkers for bee balm, which is also called wild bergamot, monarda, or horsemint.

  • Butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to geraniums.  The spotted geranium is native to South Carolina, but there are numerous other geraniums to choose from.  Rozanne is a hybrid that performs very well in Seneca.

Plant Shrubs

Shrubs are great for adding color to a garden and for filling in any holes a garden may have.  For the best spring flowers, consider planting shrubs with vibrant colors.  We suggest camellias for the cool seasons and azaleas for the warm seasons.

Camellias

Camellias are evergreens in the tea family that produce flowers similar to roses and peonies.  Colors range primarily from white to pink to red.

There are two main groups of camellias:  camellia sasanqua and camellia japonica.  Generally, sasanquas bloom from fall to winter and japonicas bloom from winter to spring.  Most camellias prefer partial shade, but some may adapt to more sunlight.

Two of our favorite camellia varieties for South Carolina are the sasanqua Shishigashira, which has pink flowers in the fall, and the japonica Kramer’s Supreme, which has blooms that start as a warm red and fade to a salmon pink.

Azaleas

Azaleas are shrubs that can be evergreen or deciduous.  These shrubs range in size from about 2 ft to 10 ft in height and prefer partial sunlight to thrive.  Azaleas can have white, yellow, orange, red, pink, or purple flowers.  Some varieties are bicolor, and they are visually striking plants.

Some of our favorite deciduous azalea varieties for South Carolina are the Gibraltar Exbury azalea, which has orange flowers, and the Admiral Semmes azalea, which has yellow flowers.

There are also dozens of varieties of evergreen reblooming azaleas that can bloom in spring, summer, and fall when grown in ideal conditions in South Carolina.  Varieties like Autumn Royalty and Pink Cupcake are some of our favorites.

Grow Roses

Roses are gorgeous additions to any Seneca, South Carolina, garden.  They’re classic, elegant, and with so many varieties there’s a rose color for everyone.  Plus, they’re the national flower of the United States and are largely hypoallergenic.

We’ll post a more in-depth guide to roses in our Knowledge Library (so stay tuned!), but for now, here is a quick guide to the different types of roses you can choose from.

Rose Varieties

There are over three hundred rose species.  In general, there are four popular categories of roses:

  • Hybrid tea.  This rose bush produces big roses with straight stems, which make them perfect for cut flowers and flower bouquets.

  • Polyantha. These roses are usually “dwarf roses,” meaning the bushes produce clusters of small roses.

  • Floribunda.  These roses are a cross between hybrid tea roses and polyanthas.  Their flowers are hardy, and the plant has long bloom seasons.  Floribunda roses are taller than polyanthas, but they are bushier and more compact than hybrid tea roses.

  • Grandiflora.  This long-stemmed rose bush is the pinnacle of the “romantic rose,” and it has large flowers.

Add Garden Décor

One of the most fun parts of gardening is adding gardening décor, which can help you create garden features or put small, personalized touches to your outdoor spaces. You can add a classic garden sculpture, like a Grecian figure. Or, you can choose a whimsical one, like a cute bear or gnome statue. Other garden décor ideas include:
